Here is a list of some of the most popular essential oils their uses and properties.
Anise Oil: A warm, sweet scent that smells somewhat like licorice. Used as a flavoring agent and to stimulate digestion. Use it as an antispasmodic for menstrual cramps. Antiseptic, carminative, expetorant, strong antispasmodic.
Atlas Cedar Oil: Sweet, camphoraceous with a woody-balsamic undetone, this oil is primarily used as an application or inhalation for the respiratory system. It is antiseptic, fungicidal and reduces oily secretions. Can be added to shampoos or facial washes. It blends well with rosewood, bergamot, cypress, jasmine, juniper, neroli, labdanum, clary sage, vetiver, rosemary, ylang ylang, oriental and floral bases.
Basil Oil: Fresh, sweet, ‘green’ scent. Uplifting, clarifying and energizing for stress, anxiety, fatigue. Nervine, antispasmodic, antirheumatic, digestive stimulant. Blends well with lavender, bergamot, lime, geranium, oakmoss, hyssop, peppermint.
Bay Laurel Oil: This strong spicy scent is a classic ingredient in men’s fragrance blends. Used as a scalp rub, it refreshes and stimulates hair follicles. Stimulant, antiseptic, antineuralgic, lymph tonic. Blends well with pine, cypress, juniper, lavender, citrus, and spice oils.
Bergamot Oil: Fruity, floral odor with uplifting and regulating properties. Good general antiseptic, antifungal, relaxant; recommended for oily skin, acne, depression. Blends well with lavender, cypress, geranium, jasmine, neroli, chamomile, lemon and juniper.
Black Pepper Oil: Warm, spicy scent. Comforting, motivating. Blends well with basil, bergamot, cypress, lavender, lemon and geranium.
Cajeput Oil: Resembles eucalyptus and niaoli. It is one of the most powerful plant antiseptics. It is used for chronic laryngitis, bronchitis, cystitis, rheumatism and to expel roundworm.
Cedarwood Oil: A very woody, dry scent that has deeply soothing and grounding effects. Lymph and circulatory tonic, vulnerary; used in cellulite formulas due to its ability to help release excess water and aid cellular fat metabolism. Blends well with wood oils, bergamot, cypress, jasmine, juniper, neroli, ylang ylang.
Cinnamon Leaf Oil: Sharp, spicy scent with warming and stimulating properties. Exotic fragrance component, broadly antiseptic; muscle warmer. Blends well with ylang ylang, orange, mandarin, balsams.
Citronella Oil: Tart, lemony aroma classically used as an insect repellant. Used in perfumery, cosmetics and soaps to cleanse thel sebaceous glands and give the hair and skin a lusturous sheen. Specific for oily skin, excessive perspiration, and as a room deodorizer. Blends well with cedarwood, geranium, lavender, citruses and pine.
Clary Sage Oil: It has a sweet, nutty scent and an almost floral quality with calming, uplifting, euphoric effects. Often used as a fixative in perfumes. Used for PMS, cramps, menopausal symptoms and stress. Blends well with juniper, sandalwood, geranium, pine, frankincense, bergamot, lavender and citrus oils.
Clove Oil: Spicy and warming. Traditionally used in tiny doses as a local anesthetic for toothache. Broadly antiseptic it can be used in germicides, mouthwashes, etc. Blends well with juniper, lavender, coriander, cardomon, geranium, sandalwood, cedarwood, pine, labdanum, jasmine, and citrus oils.
Cypress Oil: It has a woody, nutty quality with a hint of spice and resembles juniper amd pine. It makes a relaxing and refreshing bath oil. It is highly astrigent and recommended for fomentations and cataplasms. It is also an antiseptic, astrigent, and circulatoryl stimulant. Use for hemorrhoids, varicose veins, cellulite and sore throat.
Eucalyptus Oil: Eucalyptus oil has a camphoraceous smell. One of the best antiseptic oils. Stimulating, balancing and cooling, it is used in inhalations for deep bronchial infection or in massage oil for muscular aches, sluggish circulation and arthritic complaints. Blends with thyme, rosemary, lavender, marjoram, pine, cedarwood and lemon.
Fennel Oil: Sweet scent somewhat similar to anise. Excellent for making aromatic teas, face steams, soap and perfumes. Stimulating and cleansing, it invigorates the body, promotes confidence and assertiveness. Blends well with geranium, lavender, rose, and sandalwood.
Fir Oil: Sweet, balsamic and has a pine-like scent. Used for stimulating the circulation system, respiratory system and the immune system. Blends well with galbanum, lavender, rosemary, lemon and marjoram.
Frankincense Oil: Frankincense oil’s odor is similar to camphor or turpentine, but has in addition a spicy, woody note. It is an astrigent and appears to preserve a youthful complexion. Calming, meditative. Good for facial steams and inhalations. Blends well with sandalwood, pine, vetiver, geranium, lavender, neroli, orange, bergamot and cinnamon.
Geranium Oil: Earthy, flowery, rose-like scent with uplifting and balancing properties. Excellent for all skin types. Stress, anxiety and fatigue, PMS, water retention, poor circulation. Blends well with rose, lavender, neroli, patchouli.
Ginger Oil: Sharp, spicy scent. A very stimulating essence used in massage and bath oils for its warming effect. Good for muscular aches and pains. Blends well with frankincense, cedarwood, rose, neroli, patchouli.
Grapefriut Oil: Light, sweet, refreshing citrus with stimulating and uplifting properties. Specific as a tonic for oily or congested skin, acne, cellulite, depression, and fatigue. Blends well with palmarosa, bergamot, cypress, geranium, lavender, and other citruses.
Juniper Oil: Refreshing, woody-sweet fragrance. Cleansing tonic for oily skin and acne, uplifting and stimulating in stress and fatigue. Avoid if you have a history of kidney problems. Blends well with oakmoss, balsams, lavender, citrus, needle oils.
Lavender Oil: A gentle oil with a soft, floral-herbal scent and calming, relaxing, and soothing effects. Considered one of the most universally useful oils. Excellent for all skin types and as a first aid for burns, sunburns, stings and muscular aches. Antiseptic, antispasmodic, nervine, sedative. Promotes deep, restful sleep. One of the few oils that may be applied undiluted to the skin. Blends well with most oils.
Lemon Oil: Lemon oil is an aromatic astringent which is used extensively in perfumery and cosmetics. It has a very pleasant, fresh scent, excellent in bath, facial steam, and massage oils as well as face washes. Useful for oily hair and added to vinegar rinses for hair and face. Strengthens capillaries and may help correct varicose veins. Blends well with lavender, neroli, ylang ylang, rose, sandalwood, geranium, eucalyptus, juniper, lavendin, labdanum, and citrus oils
Lemongrass Oil: Lemongrass is an antiseptic oil and an effective insect repellent, with uplifting and revitalizing properties. With a heavy lemon scent it blends well with basil, tea tree, rosemary, ylang ylang, thyme, and citrus oils.
Lime Oil: Bittersweet citrus, interesting fragrance addition, sedative. Good for skin care such as acne, boils, corns, cuts, greasy skin, herpes, insect bites, etc. Also good for circulation, digestive system and immune system. Blends well with neroli, citronella, lavender, lavendin, rosemary, clary sage and other citrus oils.
Peppermint Oil: Strong, minty aroma with cooling, refreshing and stimulating effects. Used for poor memory, depression confusion, stomach upsets, fever. Antiseptical, carminative, decongestant, analgesic. Blends well with eucalyptus, lemon, lavender, rosemary, mints.
Rosemary Tunisian Oil: Fresh, herbaceous odor disinfects respiratory and sinus passages, moves sluggish circulation; best added for its clearing, energizing effects to inhalations and massage blends. Combines with eucalyptus, citrus, myrtle, mint oils.
Spearmint Oil: Sweet, minty scent; somewhat milder than peppermint. Use in morning baths to refresh muscles and tingle the sensual. Decongestant, stimulant, antidepressant, tonic. Blends well with lavender, lavendin, eucalyptus, basil, and rosemary.
Tea Tree Oil: Penetrating, medicinal odor. Broad spectrum antibacterial with excellent antifungal and antiviral properties. Use directly on burns, abrasions, abcesses, acne or wherever there is sign of infection. May be safely used in gargles, vaginal douches, sitz baths or externally for ear infections. Blends well with lavender, clary sage, rosemary, pine, geranium and pine.
