The cedar tree has been revered for its spiritual significance for thousands of years. Its wood was used for the doors of sacred temples and burned in cleansing ceremonies for purification. The tree was thought to house important gods and to be an entrance to higher realms.

The English word cedar comes from the Hebrew “qatar,” meaning to smudge, indicating cedar wood was used in purification rituals and cleansing. In the Himalayas, cedar is called “deodar” from the Sanskrit word “devdar,” meaning timber of the gods. Ancient Sumeria revered the cedar over 7,000 years ago, calling it the World Tree, the abode of Ea, their chief god. The Bible has numerous references to the cedar, including its use in the Ark of the Covenant.

The cedar has been used for healing, purification and for spiritual protection. Its spiritual properties are supposed to promote peaceful thoughts and help interpret messages from the inner self.

According to Native North American tradition, a soul, piece of land, or home collects negative energies from actions that bring harm to someone or cause spiritual pain. Smudging is a spiritual purification process believed to rid the space or someone’s spirit of these negative energies through the burning of certain herbs. Cedar is believed to carry the prayers to the higher power, as well as removing the negative energy and attracting positive energy in its place.

Instructions

  1. Gather the Herb

    • 1 Collect your cedar from the outdoors or in a specialty shop. According to tradition, the best way to obtain the herb is on your own in nature. Ask the plant for permission to use it, say a prayer of blessing, and make an offering to nature in exchange for the herb. If you can’t find it on your own, purchase it from a shop or independent seller.
    • 2Light the herbs and allow the flame to burn, for 2 minutes if using a smudge stick, a few seconds if using loose herbs. Take special care to ensure the flame does not get out of control. Extinguish the flame with care, as loose herbs can scatter easily through the air. The herbs will be smoldering, releasing smoke into the air.
    • 3 The smoke removes negative energies and draws positive ones in their place.Fan the smoke around your body using your hand or a feather. You can rub the smoke against your skin or allow it to float around your body. Breathe as usual. Do not intentionally breathe deeply, as the smoke is not intended to be inhaled.
    • 4Go to each room in your home and allow the smoke to fill the room. This should take approximately 2 minutes, depending on the size of the room. Cover all the rooms in your home.
    • 5Offer a prayer to your higher power, of general blessing and ask all negative energies be removed from your spirit and your home. Allow the herb to completely extinguish on its own. If you have extra cedar remaining, store it away from animals and children.
